Where your main water shut-off is, and why to find it now
Find your main shut-off before a leak so you know where to turn off the water.
A leak is easier to handle when you already know where the main shut-off is.
The main shut-off
It is where the water supply enters the house. In this area that usually means a basement or a utility area, often near the water heater, on the wall facing the street. Look for either a wheel-shaped handle you turn clockwise, or a lever you turn a quarter turn so it sits across the pipe.
Where else it might be
Not every house has the valve where you would expect. It may be in a crawl space, behind a closet panel or outside in a pit near the street. The valve at the street belongs to the water utility and usually needs a special key.
What the valve looks like
Older houses usually have a gate valve: a round wheel that takes several turns. Newer ones have a ball valve: a lever that moves a quarter turn. Ball valves are more reliable and easier to work in a hurry. If your valve is difficult to operate, ask us to check it and discuss replacement options.
Fixture stops
Toilets, sinks and most appliances have their own small valve underneath or behind them. If the problem is one fixture, that is faster than shutting off the whole house.
The water heater has its own
There is a valve on the cold-water line going into the water heater. It lets you shut off the heater's incoming water supply. Find it at the same time as the main shut-off.
Test the valve once you have found it
A valve that has not moved in fifteen years may not move when you need it, and some get stuck open. Turn it off, check that a tap runs dry, then turn it back on. If it will not move or develops a small leak afterward, ask us to check it.
If it will not turn
Do not force a seized valve with a wrench. A gate valve that snaps off in your hand becomes the emergency you were trying to prepare for. Leave it, and have it replaced on a dry day.
While you are there
Take a photo of the valve and where it is. Send it to whoever else lives in the house. In an emergency the person who is home may not be you.
Going away in winter
If the house will be empty in a cold spell, turning the water off at the main and opening a low tap takes most of the risk out of a frozen line. A burst pipe in an empty house does its worst damage in the days before anyone notices.
